Housework, headboards and hoopla

Hey everyone. So in my last post I was telling you about trying to keep this blog going in spite of a dead computer and told you about how I have my laptop all hacked together for now and how I did it for zero dollars. Necessity is the mother of all invention, right? And I mentioned having built a couple chairs for my kids using some old deck boards we ripped up and that I knew of a couple deals coming up from Blurb.

This week I’m kinda stoked about helping a friend out with an item she saw on Pinterest that she wants, a headboard made from pallet wood, pictured below. It’s  awesome because, in addition to giving me a reason to cut up some wood, Caroline and I haven’t seen this friend in a really long time. She’s super crafty and artistic and surely could do this herself, but she just doesn’t have the tools she needs. And I’m a typical guy who has a collection of tools he never uses and probably doesn’t need. So…yeah.

I guess what has been a common theme in all my activities the last few weeks, maybe months, is how can I get/do “X” with spending little, or no money? Many people won’t admit it, but times are tough now. Gas is insane and even groceries are getting kinda ridiculous . And any way I can save a dollar or two is a good thing. We needed lawn furniture for summer, and so I built two chairs and a couple of benches (table on the way) out of wood we ripped up last year and were going to toss out. So the cost was whatever I payed for a box of screws. A few bucks maybe. I hacked the laptop to work using free software so I could write these posts because, to be perfectly honest, I just can’t afford to buy a new computer right now. And in addition to getting to spend some time with a friend, making this headboard is gonna save her some cash as well. Pallet wood headboards are selling consistently on Etsy for 200 dollars and up! She has the pallets and I have the tools. So it’s going to be basically free for her. Any time I know a way to save some money, I try to pass that info on to whoever I can. We could all use it, right?

What else? Briseida, our baby, is growing too dang fast! She’s 9 months old now and is ready to walk any day now. She’s at that stage where she’ll let go of whatever shes hanging on to and stand by herself just long enough to realize she’s not holding on to anything, falling immediately to her tush. It’s like the old cartoons when a character would continue to run off a cliff until another pointed out that there was no ground under them. THEN they’d fall.

So I’ve been getting all the baby gates up and taking all the home precautions for a new walker in the house. With “Breezy” being our third daughter, you’d think this was easier. And I guess it is actually. But it’s no less exciting and nerve wracking at the same time. But she’s adorable and awesome. A totally happy little girl who’s too dang fearless. We call her “Scrapper” cause she isn’t afraid of anything!

Almost forgot to mention Hoopla. For those who don’t know, it is a site that works with your library card to grant you free online access to movies, audio and books. I haven’t yet used it and was wondering if any of you have. I rarely have a chance to sit back and read lately, but I have been using Kindle and enjoy it. My 6 year old, Isabella, is a total bookaholic and keeps my library card booked to the limit constantly, so it’s rare I can even borrow a book with my own card! But it’s a blessing she loves to read so much. So if you’ve used Hoopla I’d love to hear about it. Do you love it? Hate it?

And lastly, I want to leave you with the latest offer from Blurb. In my last post I said I knew of an offer, but unfortunately I didn’t get it posted in time. It was for 15% off. BUT all is good, because this offer is for 20%! See how that worked out? Only thing is it’s only for a couple days till the 30th. So I highly recommend checking it out immediately.  This is a sponsored offer, meaning if you use this link, like what you see and decide to make a purchase, Blurb will give me a small commission, which is very much appreciated. I’d like to keep this blog going and it’s these small commissions that help me pay for the costs associated with blogging. Nope, blogging is not free. I do pay for things like my hosting, domain name and it looks like I’m going to try to have to save for a computer, lol. But my wife and I have gotten books made by Blurb and were very happy with the results. So I think it’s worth checking out. Please don’t forget to leave me any questions or comments on my contact page and if you like, subscribe to my feed. I hope you’ll be reading again soon.
